With rainforest music plucked on a sape, we thanked our host families in Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, for their awesome hospitality and generosity in opening their homes to our students and providing first-rate training facilities in their school, a week before competing at the USBand's Yamaha Cup at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The competition was the culmination of months of hard work on an exceptionally challenging program, an adaptation of Sergei Rach-maninov’s “Piano Concerto No. 2”.
Our students surmounted jet-lag, tiredness, coughs and colds and gave their all as they had been doing in their year-long training in Kuching. Coached by a team of all-star American instructors, amazing improvement was seen after every rehearsal. On competition day, St. Joseph's School Band from Kuching Sarawak, was awarded the highest score of 90.1 out of 55 competing bands and swept all caption categories, including visual, music, overall effect, percussion and color guard. Well done!
A project of this magnitude is only possible with global net-working and collaboration. This experience showed me the goodness and generosity of people in sharing resources and expertise for a bunch of very hardworking, teachable and lovable kids. Working for a common cause to achieve a dream, strangers become friends, parents move mountains to open doors for thier children to realise their dream.
